Current Activities 2021-2022

May: Naomi Fitter, Brian Zhang (OSU Robotics) and I have been accepted to lead a workshop at ICRA titled,

“Sound for Robots: Understanding and harnessing sound for robotic systems“ on May 22. See our call for proposals

March: My recent sonification-based composition, Murky Waters is on exhibit as an installation at the Little Gallery in

Corvallis from March 8-April 8 2022. An shortened version (~5 mins) was recently performed as part of Diffusions at OSU

on March 9. 


February: Five of my undergraduate student researchers were awarded funding to work on a Social Justice Sonification

Project from Feb-June.


It is great to be recording live concerts again! I got my first multi-gig contract since the pandemic from Chamber Music

Corvallis to record concerts in Feb, March, April, and May. First up, Fandango! on February 18.


January: My colleague Chris Bulgren were recently accepted to present our paper, “Bedroom Recording: a Study of Collaborative Recording Among Music Technology and Music Educator Majors” at the College Music Society NW

Regional Conference at Portland State University April 22-3, 2022.


December: My colleague Aaron Barnhart and I reviewed Soundcheck 2D for College Music Symposium. See it HERE


September: My colleague Chris Bulgren and I just published “Developing 21st-Century Musicianship: Tablet-based Music Production in the General Music Classroom” in General Music Today. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1177/10483713211034434 


I am currently working on a creative research project sonifiying environmental data impacting salmon in Klamath River,

Northern California. This research was recently presented at the 8th Haifa Conference on Mediterranean Sea Research in

Haifa, Israel in July. See my video demonstration here.


August: I recorded four concerts for Chintimini Chamber Music Festival at Tyee Wine Cellars in Corvallis, Oregon

August 1, 2, 6 and 7.

July: Our fourth annual OSU Music Technology and Production for grades 7-12 was held July 12-16. Find out more

June: A collaborative study on transformative sound with colleagues and students in robotics and music technology was

presented at IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), Xi’an, China, May 30-June 5 2021.


May: junktures was presented at NoiseFloor- Shaffordshire University, Shaffordshire, United Kingdom on 5/12/21.

I was recently awarded a Pernot Research Grant to work on sonification of fish data for the Microbiology department at OSU.

I was awarded a Learning Innovation Grant by Oregon State University to build an immersive multi-channel audio system

at OSU.


April: My paper, “History Now: The Production Student in the Music History Classroom” has been selected for

presentation at AES Audio Education conference in at Middle Tennessee State University (rescheduled for July 2021

due to COVID-19).


March: junktures has been selected for performance at the College Music Society Pacific Northwest Chapter at Cornish

College in Seattle on March 28.


junktures has been selected for performance at the Society of Electro Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS)

annual conference at the University of Virginia on March 12.


January 2020: junktures has been selected to appear on Electroacoustic and Beyond 5 (RMN Classical) on June 3, 2020.


I was recently elected Secretary of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction for a two-year term,

and will take office in January.


December 2019: Oregon State University recently published an article titled, “Experiential Learning with the Pros” about

a recent series of workshops ADAM Audio and Portland-based studio owners conducted at our Corvallis campus. ADAM produced a series of videos while in residency for their ADAMEdu series, which have been viewed over 150,000 times

as of June 2020.

University on 11/15/18.


I’m The Expert was performed during ElectroAcoustic Barndance 2018 at Jacksonville University. I was also invited to

participate in a panel discussion entitled, “Teaching Music Technology in Diverse Interdisciplinary Classrooms” at the

conference.


October 2018: My interactive computer music was featured as part of The Promise and Peril of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Corvallis, Oregon


I presented my paper, “Reassessing Assessment: Considering the Value of Skills Exams in Music Production

Education” at the Association for Technology in Music Instruction National Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia

on October 12, 2018.


September 2018: My recording of an interview with artist Joan Truckenbrod is a featured component of the exhibit,

Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965-2018 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in

New York City.

Display (ICAD) at Michigan Technical University from June 10-15.


May 2018: I’m The Expert will premiere as part of the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal on Human Rights, Fracking and

Climate Change on May 14.

November 2017: Our new tri-annual concert series, Diffusions will premiere on Nov 27th in Benton Hall at 8pm.

Diffusions is a concert series featuring new music by students and faculty in Music Technology and Production at OSU.


October 2017: Electronic Music History through Guided Discovery: An Active Learning Approach to

Engage the Millennial Student,” has been published online in Engaging Students: Essays in Music Pedagogy 5.



Activities 2016-2017

May 2017: My Presentation, “Low Stakes Reflective Writing in the Music Production Curriculum” has been accepted to

be read at the 143rd Convention of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) in New York in October.


April 2017: I served as a paper chair for the music theory session during the College of Music Pacific NorthWest Regional Conference at Capilano University in Vancouver.


March 2017: I was recently awarded a Learning Innovation Grant (LIG) from Oregon State University for 100K to build a recording studio in Snell Hall.


February 2017: My piece, Kerosene is a finalist for the composition award at the Electrobrass conference in Cookeville, Tennessee in April.


December 2016: My paper entitled “Pop Rocks, Blips, and Beats: Guiding Students Through a Comprehensive History of Electronic Music” has been selected for presentation at the College of Music Pacific NorthWest Regional Conference in

April 2017.

June 2016: I am excited to announce that I have accepted the position of Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music

Technology at Oregon State University. I look forward to begin the next chapter of my career at OSU in the Fall of 2016.
